The Impact of Corruption on Human Rights

Through the State Capture Inquiry South Africans have been privy to shocking details of the depths of corruption in the country. State Capture Inquiry was a Commission which is set up to investigate allegations of state capture, corruption and fraud in the Public Sector including organs of state. The Human Rights Commission recently hosted a panel discussion under the theme "The Impact of Corruption on Human Rights". The objective of the discussion was to understand the level, pervasiveness and form of corruption at local government level; to reflect on the negative effects of corruption on the protection of human rights; and to explore synergies and possibilities for cooperation between different sectors of society in the fight against corruption. The Free State office of the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) will soon become a law clinic in order to better deal with local cases brought forward to the commission. This is according to Provincial Manager Thabang Kheswa, during a briefing about the SAHRC’s operations in the coming year.

The SA Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) will investigate the numerous allegations of corporal punishment made against Paarl Boys' High School, the Western Cape Department of Education (WCED) said on Monday.
"Given the number of allegations that have been made and the fact that parents are not allowing their children to testify, the MEC (Debbie Schäfer) has requested the assistance of the [SAHRC] to investigate, and they have agreed," said Schäfer's spokesperson, Jessica Shelver.

Information regulators from around the globe are set to meet in Johannesburg from the 10-13 March 2019 at the Vodacom Commercial Park for the International Conference of Information Commissioners (the ICIC2019).
The conference is an international gathering of Information Commissioners from more than 25 countries and representing all continents, who will gather to discuss the right of access to information (RTI).

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) says issues relating to human rights violations at schools is of great concern.

This, as the commission’s Free State Manager, Thabang Kheswa, has confirmed that they are also investigating a number of cases relating to racism in schools.
