Municipality says iIlegal electrical connections and land occupations hinder service delivery in Zakhele

Residents who moved to Zakhele in Wolseley five years ago say the municipality hasn’t provided any basic services despite paying for them.
After GroundUp sent questions to Witzenberg Municipality about the absence of refuse removal for all these years, the municipality sent out a small truck to collect the garbage.

The area has seen a spate of violent protests in recent months. Residents are demanding the area to be attached to Vhembe district Municipality.
School goers have been severely impacted. Residents shut down schools preventing learners from attending and writing their September trial exams.

 The South African Human Rights Commission (the Commission) Gauteng provincial office will convene a four day investigative hearing from 10^th – 13^th October 2017 in response to complaints it has received. The hearing arises on the back of recent public unrest in Eldorado Park and the repeated disruption of teaching and learning at Klipspruit West Secondary School.

The South African Human Rights Commission (Commission or the SAHRC) is relieved that the Vuwani shutdown has ended as of Monday the 2nd October 2017. News of the end of the shutdown is particularly pleasing to the Commission as learners are able to return to school. The Commission however, remains cautious in light of the fact that learners have missed a month’s worth of schooling in the wake of the shutdown and is concerned about the impact this may have on learning.

Johannesburg - The School Governing Body (SGB) at Klipspruit-West Secondary School has been dissolved, however, teaching is expected to continue on Tuesday, the Gauteng Department of Education has announced.
