On Wednesday, 29 May 2019, the Randburg Magistrates Court sitting as the Equality Court will hear the South African Human Rights Commission’s (“the Commission”) discrimination and hate speech claim against Mr Angelo Agrizzi. This application by the Commission follows Mr Agrizzi’s testimony at the State Capture Commission of Inquiry in which he admitted to using racial slurs.

The South African Human Rights Commission (Commission) congratulates President Cyril Ramaphosa on his inauguration as Head of State. His poignant speech has significantly added a mood of great hope among South Africans. The Commission is optimistic for a more enabling environment for Chapter 9 institutions, not only to support constitutional democracy but also to assist the government in fulfilling its obligations to respect, protect, promote and fulfil the human rights in the Constitution.

The South African Human Rights Commission (“Commission”) KZN Provincial Office will be participating at the major workshops and exhibition hosted by the Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs: Consumer Affairs Division, under the theme “Food Safety Workshops on Expired Goods”. The Commission considers these workshops to be critical within the human rights framework, in light of the various incidents and allegations that have risen pertaining the production and selling of the so called “fake foods”.

Today, 17t May 2019, the South African Human Rights Commission commemorates the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia (IDAHOT).    

IDAHOT is observed globally to raise awareness of the rights of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex persons, and other gender non-conforming (LGBTI and GNC) persons worldwide. The 17th May was chosen in 1990 to commemorate the decision to remove homosexuality from the International Classification of Diseases of the World Health Organization (WHO).  

The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (the Commission or KNCHR) is an independent National Human Rights Institution (NHRI) established under Article 59 of the Constitution of Kenya, 2010 and the KNCHRAct, 2011. The Commission's mandate is the promotion and protection of human rights in Kenya.

The South African Human Rights Commission (the Commission) has issued a subpoena (Notice to Appear) against the Acting Director-General of the Department of Home Affairs, Mr Thulani Mavuso, to appear before the Commission on Thursday, 16 May 2019 to explain the Department’s failure to cooperate with the Commission as required in section 181(3) of the Constitution and sections 4(2) and 13(4) of the South African Human Rights Commission Act, 2013.

The Eastern Cape Provincial Office will be embarking on Public Outreach Engagements in Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Municipality and Koukamma Local Municipality. The Public Outreach Engagements are intended at advancing the mandate of the South African Human Rights Commission and will be in collaboration with Public Protector South Africa and Black Sash.
