The South African Human Rights Commission (“Commission”) is convening again a subpoena hearing in terms of section 15(1)(c) and (d) of the South African Human Rights Commission Act 40 of 2013 (“SAHRC Act”), following the non-appearance of the Municipal Manager of the Thembisile Hani Local Municipality (“Municipality”) on 24 July 2019 and repeated failure of the Municipality to respond to allegations levelled against it by Mr Joseph Sibanyoni (“Mr Sibanyoni”) on 16 November 2018 and Ms Thembi Mahlangu (“Ms Mahlangu”) on 18 January 2019, respectively.

The Commissioner responsible for civil and political rights at the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC), Mr. Chris Nissen will be conducting a Provincial Visit in the Free State Province from 5 – 11 September 2019. The purpose of the visit is to assess the treatment of persons deprived of their liberty in the province.

The brazen kidnapping of six year old Amy-Lee De Jager, in Vanderbijlpark, on 2 September 2019 outside her school and the horrific murder of the 19 year old student, Uyinene Mrwetyana, have shaken the nation.

Johannesburg - The SA Human Rights Commission has called on government to address community concerns urgently after Soweto residents went on a rampage and looted foreign-owned stores Wednesday night.

The flag of hate is lowered

The Equality Court in Johannesburg has ruled that gratuitous displays of the old South African flag constitute hate speech, unfair discrimination and harassment. The ruling is a victory for the Nelson Mandela Foundation, which brought the application. But, suggested Judge Phineas Mojapelo, it should also be seen as a victory for the dream of a non-racial, united South Africa.

The Equality Court made this ruling on Wednesday after a complaint was lodged by the Nelson Mandela Foundation and the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC).

Cape Town – The SA Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) has challenged the eviction of 300 people from the Klein Akker farm in Kraaifontein, charging that a failure by the City to provide appropriate alternative accommodation to families, as well as the way in which the eviction was carried out by the property owner, amounted to a violation of various human rights.

The probe followed the negative results of water tests conducted by the CSIR in Hammanskraal.
