The SAHRC Western Cape provincial office will this week be embarking on various monitoring and advocacy activities in the Overberg District Municipality. Section 184 (1) (c) of the South African Constitution states that the Commission must monitor and assess the observance of human rights in the Republic.  The role of monitoring and assessing human rights and potential human rights violations, provides for an opportunity for the Commission to ensure redress and to ensure that human rights are upheld in the Republic.

The mother of a 13-year old girl who was allegedly gang raped by three senior boys in an Eastern Cape school hostel says in spite of many promises of support and counselling from the Eastern Cape education department, her daughter has been left to fend for herself.

The incident in early June was only reported on July 1. Three boys have since been arrested and released on bail.

The SA Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) says it was inundated with complaints from employees opposed to their employers' insistence on mandatory Covid-19 vaccinations.

According to the commission's 2020/2021 trends analysis report, the Gauteng office in particular received many formal complaints from employees.

The complicated issue of the right to freedom of choice and the right to an environment not harmful to one's health and wellbeing continues to dominate public discourse, it said.

The outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 led to a new category of violations being reported to the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC).

In its annual Trends Analysis Report for 2020-2021, the commission said it received 221 complaints relating to Covid-19 and 452 enquiries relating to the pandemic.

The province with the most complaints was the Free State with 64 complaints, followed by Gauteng with 57. Gauteng recorded the highest number of enquiries - 165.

The state of healthcare institutions and the quality of services provided in the Free State, will this week be under scrutiny by the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC).

The team led by the SAHRC chairperson, Bongani Majola, kicked off their oversight visit at the Pelonomi Hospital and MUCPP community clinic in Bloemfontein. The Provincial Manager of the SAHRC, Thabang Kheswa, stated they started with the two institutions because they have had complaints coming from the provincial office. They will over the week visit other institutions in the province, including the Manapo Hospital in Qwaqwa.

Hearings into the lack of access to water in KwaZulu-Natal by the South African Human Rights Commission were supposed to start on Monday.

The inquiry was meant to sit for the next eleven days in the province.
