A significant number of children across the Eastern Cape, who are living in abject poverty, are dying from Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) caused by hunger.

The South African Human Rights Commission in the Eastern Cape started an inquiry into complaints of severe malnutrition amongst children in the province.

The Inquiry started on Monday in East London and will run through to Thursday.

Chairperson of the Tongaat Civic Association, Don Perumall, said Monday marked 126 days of residents not having running water in their taps.

Durban — KwaZulu-Natal’s housing crisis involving flood victims has drawn the attention of the SA Human Rights Commission (SAHRC), which will this coming weekend conduct an oversight visit in the province focusing on the impact of the floods disaster on the right to adequate housing.

Durban — The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) has criticised the KwaZulu-Natal master water plan, calling it an ambitious document that lacked detail on how it would be implemented.

The commission was grilling new Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) MEC Sihle Zikalala during the commission’s Provincial Inquiry on Access to Water held in Umhlanga on Tuesday.

The SA Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) said this on Friday in response to a news report earlier this week that Gauteng education MEC Panyaza Lesufi supported a “strong review” of the law that banned corporal punishment in schools.
