The SAHRC KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Office will conduct Human Rights Champions’ Workshop with the Sthabile Community Development Centre NPO located in Amatikwe, Inanda under eThekwini Municipality.

The workshop aims to empower Human Rights Champions on the role they play in supporting democracy, the mandate of the SAHRC and protecting the rights of impoverished communities.

The SAHRC in Mpumalanga will be conducting a human rights capacity building workshop for traditional healers’ organisations under the theme “Promoting and Protecting Health Rights”.

Mental health is a public health problem in South African society today. People with mental health conditions are exposed to a wide range of human rights violations. The violations include the stigma and discrimination that often result in such people being excluded from receiving healthcare services and from leading full lives in communities.

The Commissioners and the North West Provincial Office of the South African Human Rights Commission are scheduled to meet with the Provincial Executive of the North West Province to discuss human rights concerns in the province. Some of the issues of concern include service delivery challenges at the local and provincial government level, governance and leadership challenges faced by some municipalities and provincial departments which impact the realisation of human rights.

The South African Human Rights Commission Gauteng provincial office will visit Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital (CMJAH) on 15 August 2023.

The hospital is an accredited central hospital which serves patients from across the Gauteng province as well as neighbouring provinces. Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital offers a full range of tertiary, secondary and highly specialised services.

In 2013, the South African Human Rights Commission (the SAHRC) instituted proceedings against Rev Bougardt regarding discriminatory statements he had made against gay and lesbian people between October 2011 and November 2012. In 2014, a court order (the 2014 Order) was issued in terms of which Rev Bougardt was found to have been in breach of Section 10 (1) of the Promotion of Equality and Prevention of Unfair Discrimination Act 4 of 2000 (the Equality Act) by making the said discriminatory statements and ordered him to refrain from making similar statements in future.

DISGRUNTLED Wesbank residents who have experienced electricity challenges for nearly two years have now roped in the SA Human Rights Commission SAHRC , claiming Eskom has failed them. SAHRC commissioner Chris Nissen visited the area yesterday after community leaders requested that he intervene over what they described as lack of delivery of basic services. About two months ago, residents marched to Eskom's offices with a memorandum of demands calling for unplanned load shedding to stop. Last year, the stateowned entity met with community leaders who wanted it to account for its offline call centre and infrastructure damages, among other issues.

MEC Reagen Allen on terms 'Bravo, Charlie not racist' MEC for Police Oversight and Community Safety, Reagen Allen, has defended the use of "racist" terms in a public announcement for the Chrysalis Academy intake. In its call for applicants for January 2024, the department said it sought to admit 230 men into the "23 CHARLIE males course", while women for the "23 BRAVO female course" would be selected from the 2022 waiting list.

Abahlali turns to rights body

Activists from land rights movement Abahlali baseMjondolo, which represents impoverished people, say they live in hiding, perpetually looking over their shoulders, as they believe they are targets for assassination because they pose a threat to the ANC. The movement says 24 of its people have been killed in hits and in police action and yet only two people have been convicted for the murders. With elections looming next year, Abahlali baseMjondolo, which focuses on KwaZuluNatal, believes the assault on its members will accelerate.
