SAHRC observes the 2011 World Environment Day

On Sunday, 5 June 2011, many countries around the world will observe World Environment Day. While there are a host of concerns regarding the natural environment, however one of the most pressing concerns is deforestation, hence the theme for this year is “Forests: Nature at Your Service.”

As South Africa celebrates the 17th anniversary of its transition to democracy the Human Rights Commission commends the laudable progress that has been made to deepen democracy and freedom in the last 17 years.
Since the dawn of the new democratic dispensation the Commission has been actively involved in seeking to ensure that the vision of a South Africa that is built on the foundations of freedom, equality and dignity, becomes a reality for all.
Political parties must live up to spirit of the Electoral Code of Conduct

Metaphoric threats of violence, using language that suggests members of the opposition are enemies, removal of opposition election posters, booing and heckling of the opposition during campaigning - undermine the spirit of tolerance.
Adv. Mushwana concerned about the allegations of police brutality during service delivery protests in places like Ermelo, Zandspruit, Ficksburg, and in other places.

Thursday, 14 April 2011. Johannesburg. The SA Human Rights Commission Chairperson Adv Lawrence Mushwana engaged the Independent Complaints Directorate this morning regarding the attack and subsequent death of Mr Andries Tatane, during a service delivery protest in Ficksburg yesterday.

The South African Human Rights Commission (Commission) has written to the Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Ms Nkoana- Mashamaite to urge the government to sign the statement on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity which is currently under discussion at the United Nations Human Rights Council.
