The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) and Afrikaans singer Sunette Bridges have reached an agreement in their matter heard before the Equality Court of South Africa.  The SAHRC, Western Cape, lodged a case at the Equality Court against Bridges during 2014 concerning the allegedly racist nature of the commentary on her Facebook page.

The South African Human Rights Commission has today started with a two-day Provincial Hearing in to the challenges facing access to Emergency Medical Services in the Eastern Cape.
The Commission decided to hold this Hearing following systemic problems with regards to the provision of health services in the province.

The South African Human Rights Commission will be hosting a two day provincial hearing focusing on access to emergency medical services in the Eastern Cape, starting from the 25th to 26th March 2015.

The South African Human Rights Commission (Commission), together with the Danish Institute for Human Rights, has published a Business and Human Rights Country Guide (Country guide) for South Africa. This country document will provide guidance to companies on how they can promote and respect human rights in South Africa.

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) notes with concern the allegations arising in the media regarding the adoption of a “green card” system by a community policing forum in the Western Cape, to regulate the movement of workers within the area’s more affluent suburbs.

On 26 February 2015, the Deputy Chair of the African Union’s Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (Committee), Prof. Julia Sloth-Nielsen briefed the South African Human Rights Commission (Commission) on the Concluding Recommendations by the Committee following the discussion of South Africa’s Initial Report on the Status of the implementation of the Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child. The Committee is part of the African Union and the meeting has been hailed as a significant step because it marks the beginning of a laudable effort by the Region to effectively give recognition to the work of National Human Rights Institutions.

The South African Human Rights Commission (the Commission) is extremely concerned about the constitutionality and impact of the provisions of the Emolument Attachment Orders (“EAOs”) as articulated in the Magistrates Court Act 32 of 1944(MCA) on the poor, the vulnerable, the marginalized amongst other groups including, but not limited to, the pensioners and women.  In terms of the EAO a person’s salary, may be attached should they be in arrears and fail to make alternative arrangements regarding the settling of the debt. These attachment orders can be done by a Clerk of the magistrates’ court without the judicial oversight of a magistrate.
