A delegation from the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC or Commission) today met with officials from the Hoërskool Overvaal in Vereeniging, the South African Police Service (SAPS), and demonstrators. The Commission’s intervention follows violent protests at the school that erupted this week and called on all parties to act with restraint and to ensure that demonstrations remain peaceful.

As schools are about to open in a few days, the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC or Commission) wishes to gently remind all schools that the right to a basic education, as contained in section 29 of the Constitution, is compulsory, universal and immediately realisable – meaning that it is guaranteed to all persons, regardless of nationality, status, or documentation.
