Durban - Umgeni Water said on Monday there was no danger of KwaZulu-Natal running out of water in the near term but responsible consumer behaviour was vital if the province was to achieve water security.

While KZN was still recovering from the devastating drought which is now threatening to run Cape Town taps completely dry, KZN dam levels are between 63% and 114%.

The Congress of South African Trade Unions is concerned by the deteriorating situation and the intensity of violent armed conflict between organised groups of illegal miners in many areas of the country, where illegal mining is taking place. The reports of gang violence and of armed gangs shooting at the police should send the alarm bells ringing to our authorities. The federation has repeatedly called for action to from our government to deal with this unremitting deaths of artisanal miners all across the country.

The current drought gripping the south-western parts of South Africa started as far back as the end of the 2015 summer when the rains expected to fall during the 2016 and 2017 winter seasons did not arrive.
This situation has been exacerbated by the fact that at the same time‚ the demand for water in the Western Cape Province increased because of fairly rapid economic and population growth.

The commission says it's monitoring the situation to ensure the City of Cape Town and other supporting parties work together.

The KwaZulu-Natal Health Department has decided to partner with private hospitals and specialists to address the oncology crisis in the province, department head Dr Musa Gumede said on Tuesday
“We’ve decided to engage in private/public partnerships since we can’t get specialists to work full-time in public hospitals,” said Gumede.
He was speaking at a stakeholder and media breakfast in Durban on Tuesday morning.
Gumede said the department was also engaging with the SA Human’s Rights Commission (SAHRC) on the matter on a fortnightly basis, since the Democratic Alliance’s member of provincial legislature Dr Imraan Keeka had complained to the commission about the collapse of oncology services in KZN.
“There has been a team from the department, which consists of senior members of management, including a legal expert, working on this matter,” he said.

A medical surgery in Mokopane, Limpopo, has come under fire from the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) for alleged racism, breaching a number of medical ethics codes. SAHRC provincial manager Victor Mavhidula is quoted in News24 as saying that the commission had visited the surgery and found that patients were segregated upon entry, and treated differently based on race.

A delegation from the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC or Commission) today met with officials from the Hoërskool Overvaal in Vereeniging, the South African Police Service (SAPS), and demonstrators.  The Commission’s intervention follows violent protests at the school that erupted this week and called on all parties to act with restraint and to ensure that demonstrations remain peaceful.

As schools are about to open in a few days, the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC or Commission) wishes to gently remind all schools that the right to a basic education, as contained in section 29 of the Constitution, is compulsory, universal and immediately realisable – meaning that it is guaranteed to all persons, regardless of nationality, status, or documentation.
