The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) will release its report findings and recommendations following a series of National Hearings on the Human Rights Situation of the Khoi and San Peoples in South Africa. The hearings took place in Gauteng, Northern Cape and the Western Cape between 2015 and 2017.

Human Rights Day is commemorated annually on 21st March to honour the sacrifice of those who fell during the Sharpeville massacre on this day in 1960. This massacre claimed the lives of many people protesting against the Apartheid pass laws, including children, and left in its wake the abiding memory of its horror.  National Human Rights Day holds immense significance for the South African Human Rights Commission (the SAHRC or Commission), tasked by the Constitution to monitor, promote and protect human rights.  The Commission has planned a range of activities throughout the country during human rights month and will be commemorating the day with various activities across South Africa, to emphasise the value of respect for human rights in a democratic country.

The South African Human Rights Commission, Western Cape provincial office will commemorate Human Right Day by hosting a program with learners and educators from schools in and around Cape Town. The provincial office, working in collaboration, with other Institutions supporting democracy, will be sharing with these learners, information under the topic: “RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF CHILDREN, IN A FIGHT AGAINST CRIME AND GANGSTERISM”.

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC), Mpumalanga Provincial office, will be launching its Thematic Discussion Paper on Evictions in Farming Communities. On 23 November 2017, the office conducted the Provincial Indaba on Evictions in Farming Communities at Mkhondo Local Municipality which emanated from alleged illegal evictions of farm workers, occupiers and dwellers as well as undue delays of finalisation of land claims.

The North West Provincial Office of the South African Human Rights Commission will convene a two-day Provincial Investigative Hearing on the Lack of Safety and Security Measures in Schools for Children with Disabilities from 19 – 20 March 2018.

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC or Commission) is appalled at the death of 5 year old Viwe Jali, who died earlier this week after falling into a pit latrine at Luna Primary school in Bizana, in the Eastern Cape. Only 3 years after the tragic and preventable death of 5 year old Michael Komape, the failure of the State to prevent a reoccurrence and to eradicate the prevalence of pit latrines in schools is unacceptable.

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC), Mpumalanga provincial office will be commemorating Human Rights Day under the Theme: “The Year of OR Tambo: Unity in Action in Advancing Human Rights”. The day is commemorated annually on 21 March to remind all South Africans about the sacrifices that accompanied the struggle for the attainment of democracy in the country.
