The South African Human Rights Commission (“the Commission”), in response to numerous complaints against Lindsay Maasdorp (“the Respondent”) of alleged hate speech on social media, instituted proceedings in the Western Cape High Court (sitting as the Equality Court) against the Respondent.

The South African Human Rights Commission (the Commission or the SAHRC) will recommence its National Investigative Hearing into the July 2021 Unrest in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng Provinces on Monday, the 21st February 2022. The Hearing will continue until Friday, 4th March 2022.
This second leg of the National Hearing will focus on events as they unfolded in Gauteng Province during the unrest in July 2021 and will also feature the continuation of evidence from the KZN sitting. The Hearing Panel is due to hear testimony from survivors, various community members as well as industry players in commerce, private security and State officials.

On Friday, 18 February 2022, the South African Human Rights Commission, Gauteng Provincial Office will host a stakeholder engagement in observance of the World Day of Social Justice. The World Day of Social Justice is observed and celebrated to promote social development, human dignity and equal opportunities for all. This celebration coalesces with the Commission’s medium to long-term objectives toward promoting, monitoring and protecting rights in general and the right to equality in particular.
