‘Masoyi Monster’ victims yet to be buried

Two victims of the so-called ‘Masoyi Monster’ are yet to be buried. The Mpumalanga High Court found Julius Mndawe guilty on five counts of murder and defeating the ends of justice, last week.

Mndawe killed and buried the women in his yard at the Masoyi Village near Hazyview, between 2018 and 2019.

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) will on Monday conduct a joint inspection with government in Alexandra, north of Johannesburg.

The commission will assess progress in implementing directives following its joint report with the Public Protector in July last year, which recommended that government urgently intervene to correct human rights violations in the township.

A child’s sewage-soaked teddy bear lies amid plastic bottles and rotting waste, while an onshore breeze carries the stench of human excrement and rotten eggs to people gathered on the shore.

This was the sight and smell that greeted members of the SA Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) and media on a brief inspection of Wemmer Pan, a recreational lake south of Johannesburg’s CBD, on Tuesday.

SAHRC to assess pollution in the pan

The SAHRC will now start testing the pan to see if the levels of E.coli drops in the lake as well as look for potential guilty parties that might be the source of industrial waste that ends up in the pan.

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) visited Wemmer Pan on February 15 after receiving a complaint about the pollution and the stench coming from the lake.
