Media Invite: SAHRC hosts a two day national hearing on access to emergency medical services in the Eastern Cape

The South African Human Rights Commission will be hosting a two day provincial hearing focusing on access to emergency medical services in the Eastern Cape, starting from the 25th to 26th March 2015.

The hearing follows the systematic problems with regards to the provision of health services in the province, and complaints that the Commission has dealt with.

Members of the media are invited to attend and report about the proceedings of this hearing.
The hearing will take place as follows:

VENUE:SAHRC Eastern Cape Office, 4th Floor Oxford House, 86 – 88 Oxford Street, East London.
TIME: 09:00 – 16:00 (25th March 2015)
09:00 – 14:00 (26th March 2015)

The Commission received a complaint regarding ambulance services in the Eastern Cape in March 2013, alleging a violation of Sections 27(1)(a) and (3) of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, Act 108 of 1996.

According to the allegation in the complaint right to access to health services was violated by the provincial department and it is for this reason that the Commission has decided to hold a Provincial Hearing on Access to Emergency Services in the Eastern Cape.

SAHRC Deputy Chairperson Dr Pregs Govender a Commissioner responsible for promoting the rights to access of basic services together with Commissioner Malatji who is responsible for the rights of the elderly and the disabled will preside over the hearing.
