The North West Provincial Office of the Commission (NWPO) will commemorate National Human Rights Day on 20 March 2024. The aim of the commemoration is to remember and celebrate the contribution of past and present-day human rights defenders in advancing human rights in South Africa and the North West Province in particular.
As part of this year’s commemoration, the NWPO will seek to honour individual human rights defenders and organisations who continue to meaningfully contribute to the advancement of human rights and the fostering of a human rights culture in the province.
To this end, the NWPO is making a call for submissions from interested human rights defenders and organisations who wish to be considered for such honours. The criteria that will be used to assess the submissions include the following:
• The nominee must be an individual or Non-Profit Organisation operating in the North West;
• The nominee must have a proven track record of three or more years in advancing human rights in the North West;
• The nominee must have reached or provided a service to 50 or more people in the past year;
• The nominee must be able to demonstrate the impact of their work in advancing human rights in the province.
Interested individuals and organisations to submit the following, together with their indication of interest:
• Registration as an NPO in the case of an organisation;
• Individual’s profile/ profile of the Non-Profit organisation, which should outline the following, amongst others:
o The date of establishment of the organisation;
o The history of the organisation;
o The founding and current members of the organisation;
o The type of services being offered by the individual/ organisation and its contribution to the advancement of human rights;
o The number of people reached/serviced by the individual/organisation in the last year;
o The impact of the work of the organisation.
• Proof of the number of people reached/serviced in the last year;
• 3 or more testimonials from people assisted by the nominee to demonstrate the impact of the work.
Successful nominees will be invited to the NWPO’s National Human Rights Day commemorative event scheduled to take place on 20 March 2024 in Rustenburg and presented with honorary awards at the event.
