Media Advisory: SAHRC Eastern Cape to host a calendar day on International Human Rights Day

14 December 2022

Attention: Editors and Reporters

International Human Rights Day is a calendar day that is commemorated annually to bring awareness and to increase knowledge of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (“UDHR”) as a foundational blueprint for taking concrete actions to stand up for human rights and to tackle pressing global issues today. The UDHR will celebrate its 75 years by focusing on its legacy, relevance and activism. This year’s Human Rights Day slogan is “Dignity, Freedom, and Justice for All” and the call to action is #StandUp4HumanRights.

The Eastern Cape Provincial Office (ECPO) will celebrate International Human Rights Day by focusing on the influence the UDHR’s legacy has on the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa (“Constitution”) and how to it ensures access to justice and the enforcement of laws against gender-based violence and femicide. South Africa has an escalating gender-based violence and femicide pandemic, which is further perpetuated by challenges relating to enforcement of laws and compliance that provide redress. This has resulted in communities losing faith in the justice system.

The ECPO intends to commemorate International Human Rights Day to ventilate systematic challenges presented in law enforcement in respect of gender-based violence and femicide.

The information sharing session will be held as follows:

Date:   15th of December 2022

Time:   10H00 – 12H00

Venue: Zanoncedo Empowerment Centre (Mpongo/Tsholomnqa)

- Ends –
