The South African Human Rights Commission has sadly learned of the untimely death of Professor Barry Hanyane. Professor Hanyane died on 11 May 2022 in hospital in Johannesburg. Prof Hanyane was an Associate Professor at the North West University in the Department of Public Management and Administration.
Professor and the Commission have had a very good working relationship over the recent past. He was one of the panelists at the Commission’s Service Delivery Inquiry in Mpumalanga Municipalities in 2021, and has been instrumental in the success of many other human rights debates in the country. He has also contributed immensely to the critical public discourses and engagements especially around public administration and political accountability in the country. His views have shaped many of government’s strategic positions which continue to improve the lives of the poor in South Africa.
The human rights sector, especially constitutional bodies established to support democracy in the country, will sorely miss Professor Hanyane.
The Commission conveys its condolences to Prof’s family and loved one’s, and wishes them strength during this trying times. May Professor Hanyane’s soul rest in eternal peace.
