On 20 May 2021, the South African Human Rights Commission (“the SAHRC”) in the North West Province will participate in the Covid-19 Vaccine Roll-Out Consultative Session organised by the Department of Health. The Department of Health is in the process of consulting key stakeholders in connection with the second phase of vaccination which prioritises the elderly and persons with disabilities.
In terms of section 184(1) of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, the SAHRC is mandated to promote respect for human rights and a culture of human rights; to promote the protection, development and attainment of human rights; and to monitor and assess the observance of human rights in the Republic.
Accordingly, through its participation in the Vaccine Roll-Out Consultative Session, the SAHRC’s aims to ensure that the Department of Health’s Vaccine Roll-Out Strategy / Plan promotes the respect, protection and fulfilment of the human rights of all people in our country and affirms the democratic values of human dignity, equality and freedom.
The SAHRC also intends to monitor the implementation of the Vaccine Roll-Out Strategy / Plan in order to ensure adequate access to the COVID-19 vaccines to all people in our country in particular those living in rural communities, homeless persons, undocumented persons (including foreign nationals), elderly persons and persons with disabilities.
