SUMMARY:Earth Hour
DTSTAMP:20160301T040703Z
DESCRIPTION:\NThe Earth Hour is celebrated on the last Saturday of March every year. It is observed from 20:30 to 21:30 hour local time of each place. The day is observed in order to conserve energy and draw the world's attention to the cause of environmental degradation.\NIt all started in 2007, with the first ever Earth Hour organized by the World Wide Fund (WWF) for Nature in Sydney. The hour saw as many as 2.2 million residents of Sydney switch off the lights of their homes and offices in order to pledge their support to saving the environment. The trend soon caught on and several other countries participated across the globe in this initiative, which is organized by WWF each year. At present, there are about 152 countries which actively observe the hour each year.\NThe concept of Earth Hour is based upon conserving energy, and hence, opting for a sustainable future. Experts around the world believe that excessive energy consumption is one of the primary causes of global warming that is being experienced around the world. Thus, by switching off non-essential lights for an hour, people not only aim to conserve energy but also bring awareness about the deteriorating environment around us.\NThe Earth hour is one of the most recent initiatives on a global scale, but has been the most popular out of all such initiatives such as World Water Day etc. The participation in the event is voluntary. According to the local time, homes and offices switch off their lights from 20:30 hrs to 21:30 hrs in order to pledge their support for the cause. The switching off of lights is not confined to homes and offices only though.\NImportant landmarks around the world as well as important government institutions also switch off their lights in order to pledge the support of a country to the cause of environmental awareness. Some iconic landmarks which observe the hour are the Sydney Harbor Bridge, Eiffel Tower and several other monuments and structures of international significance.\NWWF, the organizer of the event annually, came up with the idea in order to have people actively participate in working for the environment. The larger cause behind the concept is to adopt healthier and more sustainable ways of living. Thus, if you are pledging your support to the cause of the environment, you shouldn't limit such practices to an hour every year only.\NThe event has been largely followed across the globe by people of different nationalities. However, there are some detractors of the event as well. According to some people, the event actually contributed to global warming. Their argument is that when people switch off their lights, they inevitably use candles instead. Since the event happens on a global scale, there is far more energy consumed than it is saved, which actually contributes to global warming. Despite the detractors, the event has actually been successful in raising awareness among people to the plight of the environment.\N

SUMMARY:Human Rights Day
DTSTAMP:20160301T040856Z
DESCRIPTION:We celebrate this day each year to remind us of the great suffering and loss of life that accompanied the struggle for human rights. It is to remind us that people in South Africa will never again be denied their human rights. \N What is Human Rights Day? Human Rights Day (21 March) is the day set aside to celebrate human rights and to remind all South Africans of their human rights. \N What are human rights? Human rights are the rights that everyone has, simply because they are human beings. They are the rights we all have from the moment we are born. We do not have to earn them and they cannot easily be taken away from us. \N The list of human rights protected in South Africa is the Bill of Rights, which is Chapter 2 of the Constitution. The Constitution is the highest law of South Africa. Everyone in South Africa, including the government, must follow it. The rules set out in a Constitution are very hard to change, and so the rights in the Bill of Rights are also very hard to change. This means that it is difficult for anyone to change your rights or to try and take them away from you. \N Rights and responsibilities Because everyone has these rights regardless of their race, age or gender, we all have to respect other people's rights as well. It is no good saying that you have these rights if you are doing things at the same time, which go against other people's rights. And, we must all respect and follow the laws of the country as well. \N Why do we celebrate Human Rights Day on 21 March? On 21 March 1960, events were planned for many parts of the country, for people to protest against the Pass Laws. These laws required all Africans living or working in and around towns to carry a document (known as a pass) with them at all times. Failure to carry this document would lead to arrest by the police and to people being sent away from the towns in which they lived. On this day people decided to go to police stations without their passes and to demand that the police arrest them. \N The idea was that so many people would be arrested and the jails would become so full that the country would not be able to function properly. It was hoped that this would lead to the Pass Laws being scrapped. At Sharpeville in Gauteng, thousands of people gathered at the police station demanding to be arrested. They were met by 300 police officers. After a scuffle broke out, the police opened fire on the crowd. At least sixty-seven people were killed and 180 injured by the shooting.

SUMMARY:National investigative hearing on the impact of protest-related actions on the right to a basic education in South Africa
DTSTAMP:20160609T121629Z
DESCRIPTION:13th to 15th June 2016The South African Human Rights Commission will hold a national investigative hearing on the Impact of protest-related actions on the right to education in South Africa.  The hearing will take place from 13 to 15 June 2016.One of the key focus areas of the Commission’s work is “child rights and basic education”. Over the years the Commission has worked on these rights through a range of interventions, responding to systemic concerns and the need for reforms. The Commission acknowledges that the right to assembly, demonstration, picket and petition (hereinafter referred to as “right to protest”) as contained in section 17 of the Constitution is an integral right that requires respect and protection. However, the exercise of such a right should not negatively impact on other rights, such as the right to a basic education. Given the historical trajectory of closures of schools on account of protest actions, and despite the factors which inform such protests, the Commission deems it appropriate for immediate reforms to be implemented. These reforms must take account of the practical realities recorded from the past, the need for cooperation and integration, prioritisation, end-to-end support and optimal protection of the rights of learners.Recent trends, in which protest-related action has increasingly had a negative impact on schools and children’s attendance at school, are disconcerting. Frequently, the context within which the protests take place are not connected to education. Consequently, and in line with its constitutional mandate, the Commission seeks to undertake a national hearing where stakeholders can help to find solutions so that children’s right to a basic education is respected by all. It has become apparent through the Commission’s monitoring mandate that the right to a basic education is being rendered extremely vulnerable. This conclusion triggers the protection mandate of the Commission and has occasioned the need for a national hearing to highlight and explore the issue, its impact and to develop recommendations to ensure better respect for and protection of the  right to a basic education. A number of stakeholder from government (national and provincial) as well as law enforcement and civil society are expected to participate in the hearings. DESCRIPTION:National dialogue on Business & Human Rights (the institution’s human rights month event)The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) will be hosting a Dialogue on Business and Human Rights on 13 & 14 March 2018 at the Capital Moloko Hotel, Johannesburg to discuss critical issues with regard to the impact of business on human rights across primary stakeholder groups, including government, business and civil society.Since 2013, the SAHRC has sought to promote an awareness and understanding of the impact of business on human rights in South Africa.
