The South African Human Rights Commission (the SAHRC or the Commission) notes with concern the events that took place on Wednesday, the 30th October 2019, in the Cape Town CBD outside the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR)’s office. The Commission views this event and the events which led up to action by the South African Police Service (SAPS) as complex and the SAHRC will ensure that these actions are investigated to establish if human rights were violated.

The Commissioners of the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC/Commission) will be conducting a provincial visit in Mpumalanga from 14 – 18 October 2019. Commissioner Mohamed Shafie Ameermia responsible for the focal area on the right to housing, water, sanitation and business and human rights together with Commissioner Jonas Ben Sibanyoni responsible for the focal area on land, environment and the right to food will lead the five-day provincial visit in Mpumalanga.

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) will commemorate International Day of Older Persons at the KwaMashu Christian Care Society, a residential facility for older persons.  In 1990, the United Nations General Assembly declared 01 October as the International Day of Older Persons and later went on to adopt a number of instruments aimed at advancing and promoting the rights of older persons. The day is celebrated annually, across the globe to recognise the contributions of senior citizens and to examine issues that affect their everyday lives.

The South African Human Rights Commission (The Commission) will be conducting a water- site inspection in Stinkwater and Hammanskraal.  The Commission will be assessing the progress made by the City of Tshwane in addressing the community’s concerns on water quality. This inspection follows the report made by Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) in 2018 stating that the groundwater in Stinkwater and Hammanskraal contains concentrations of nitrates and phosphates and is not safe for human consumption.
