The South African Human Rights Commission (the SAHRC or the Commission) will host its final monthly media briefing for the year 2021, on Tuesday the 21st December 2021 at 10:00 AM.
The briefing will be led by the Deputy Chairperson of the South African Human Rights Commission, Fatima Chohan and Commissioner André Gaum.

The South African Human Rights (the Commission) appeals to the people of South Africa for calm.
It has noted the decision of the North Gauteng High Court nullifying and setting aside the decision of the head of the Department of Correctional Services to grant medical parole to former President Jacob Zuma and ordering the latter to return to Correctional Services to serve the remainder of the sentence that had been imposed on him by the Constitutional Court. The Commission also notes that the social media is already abuzz with statements that have the potential to inflame the situation in the country. Some statements have been made on public news media which can have the same effect. The Commission recalls that such media statements did in fact inflame the situation in June / July 2021 and led to the July unrest that took many innocent lives and resulted in large scale destruction of property in addition to violations of other human rights of many people in the country. The Commission is in the process of investigating that July unrest.

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) and the University of Cape Town’s Online High School have partnered on an initiative that aims to accelerate access to Online Learning, particularly for girl children in rural areas. In its pilot phase, set for the 2022 school calendar, this important collaboration will focus on the communities of the Valley of a Thousand Hills, about 50 km northwest of Durban, in KwaZulu-Natal.

Last week Monday, 15 November 2021, the South African Human Rights Commission (“the Commission”), commenced its National Investigative Hearing into the July 2021 Unrest in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng Provinces. Throughout the week, the Hearing Panel heard testimony from survivors, various community members as well as industry players in commerce and private security. Following an application by the Evidence Leaders, the Panel granted a ruling for an inspection in loco in Pietermaritzburg, Phoenix and surrounding areas and such inspection took place on Friday, 19 November 2021.

The Mpumalanga Provincial Office will be visiting 10 magistrate courts and 10 police stations in Gert Sibande District Municipality. The visits are aimed at rolling out the equality toolkit and to raise awareness on the functionality of the equality courts among the court and South African Police Services (SAPS) officials.
