HRC to focus on Mpumalanga for Human Rights Week 2004
The South African Human Rights Commission will focus its national energies on the Mpumalanga Province for Human Rights Week, 15th to 21st March 2004. The Commission traditionally chooses a provincial focus for its annual human rights week celebration. This occasion is used to raise human rights awareness amongst communities in South Africa and to monitor service delivery and assist to fast track this where possible.
The Commission’s weeklong campaign will be held at Nkomazi East and West, at Enhlanzeni District. Activities will range from meetings with tribal authorities, school visits, visits to farm schools and resettled communities, to visits to hospitals. A special feature of this year’s campaign will be a Community Voices Forum, where members of communities will be given a chance to relate their experiences in terms of accessing socio-economic rights, such as the right to water, healthcare, social security, education etc.
The Commission will also take complaints regarding human rights violations from the communities concerned.
