On 13 of August 2002, the South African Human Rights Commission will be launching its manual as required in terms section 14 of the Promotion of Access to Information Act No. 2 of 2000, at its head office in Johannesburg.
The purpose of this manual is to inform the public how to access certain records of the Commission in terms of the Act.
The Act's objectives are to promote accountability and effective governance of all public and private bodies and to give effect to the Constitutional right of access to information, as provided for by section 32 of the Constitution.
This event should be especially interesting for the press to follow, as all public and private bodies must submit their manuals by the 15th of August 2002.
The Act is also likely to become a powerful instrument for journalists in the years to come to obtain information from public and private bodies.
