Following the successful launch of the report on the Inquiry into Sexual Violence Against Children that was held on 23 April 2002, the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) will be holding workshops to engage various stakeholders from government departments, NGOs, social workers associations, hospitals, the SAPS, youth groups, clinics and legal services. At the launch, Chairperson of the South African Human Rights Commission, Ms Shirley Mabusela, emphasised the need for all parties to engage in collaborative efforts in order to ensure that children who are sexually abused, are offered the best possible services and care.

To this end, the SAHRC, organised a two-day workshop, which will bring together stakeholders to deliberate on how best to ensure that the services provided to children who have been sexually abused, are improved. The workshop will be held on 11th and 12th June at the Indaba Hotel in Sandton and will bring together various sectors. The objectives of the workshop are as follows:

  • To make known the findings and recommendations of the Commissions Inquiry;
  • To critically unpack the recommendations and address the implications and implementation of these recommendations on all relevant sectors;
  • To ensure that sectors working in areas such as Legal, Health, Social Services, Safety and Security, Education, Media, are able to discuss their various roles as well as develop action plan an that ensures an assertive and efficient system; and
  • To strengthen all networks in place, thus ensuring effective monitoring with regards to the implementation of an action plan.
