The South African Human Rights Commission and the ANC Youth League President, Mr Julius Malema met today in a meeting facilitated and attended by Mrs Winnie Madikizela-Mandela.
After frank and open discussions about the utterances made by Mr Malema on the 16th of June and the subsequent letter to Mr Malema by the SAHRC, everybody present confirmed their commitment to uphold the Constitution.
Mr Malema appreciated the criticism levelled against him for using the word “kill” and recognizes that the word could have been interpreted differently. Mr Malema also explained that it was never his intention to incite violence and undertakes never again to use the word and is committed to democracy and the advancement of human rights.
As we work towards consolidating our democracy we understand that there will be robust debates. We however, urge all South Africans to do this within the confines of the Constitution.
Jody Kollapen, Chairperson, SAHRC
Julius Malema, President, ANC Youth League
