Public Hearing on school-based violence
Sep 26, 2006

Following the Commission’s call for submissions on School-Based Violence: Public Hearing, we received a confident response from various sectors indicating that the issues set out in the Term of Reference are contentious and in need of public discourse.

The written submissions have raised issues including the long-term effects of violence on individuals’ mental health, violence based on gender and / or sexual orientation, the lack of racial integration, violence against educators, corporal punishment and various suggestions of alternatives to violence.

The Commission wishes to thank all departments, organisations/institutions and individuals who have contributed to this process.

The Commission once again announces that this two days event will be convened from the 28th – 29th September 2006 in Cape Town at the City Council Chamber (Civic Centre) and commences at 08h30. The hearing is open to all members of the public.

Please direct media enquiries to Ms Lorraine Molepo on Tel: (011) 484 8300 Ext 2092.

Alternatively contact Ms. Judith Cohen on 083 284 1115 or Ms. Monique Davis on 082 499 3965 for further information.
