The South African Human Rights Commission officially launched the Right to Basic Education Report (RBE) at the Commissions offices in Parktown today. The report, which follows the Public Hearings held in October last year, explores the meaning, content and context in which the right to basic education is experienced in South Africa.
During the launch, the report was formally handed over to the Department of Education for review. Accepting the report on behalf of the department, Mr Duncan Hindle, the Director General of the Department of Education expressed appreciation to the SA Human Rights Commission for compiling the report and committed the Department to studying its findings and recommendations.
The report’s release coincides with the 30th anniversary of the 1976 Soweto uprisings. It thus comes at a significant time within our young democracy to reflect on the progress made thus far in addressing past inequalities within the education sector.
The launch was well attended with participants from civil society organisations; government departments; teacher unions; school governing bodies; other chapter 9 institutions and national and provincial youth commissions. Representatives from persons with disabilities also attended the launch.
