Adv Mabedle Lawrence Mushwana was appointed a Commissioner and elected the chairperson of the South African Commission in October 2009. His areas of focus within the Commission include, amongst others, refugees, health and housing.

Before joining the Commission, Adv Mushwana served a full term as the Public Protector for the Republic of South Africa from 2002 to 2009. During this tenure, he was the executive secretary of the African Ombudsman Association from 2003 to 2009.

Adv Mushwana has had a successful career in the legal fraternity dating back from 1974, both in government and private sector. He was a practicing attorney and now an advocate with B.juris LLB degrees and a further two diplomas in Law. As an attorney, he defended political activists and detainees, amongst others.

As a political activist, he participated in the drawing-up of the South African Constitution. He was also a member of the ANC and from 1999 – 2002 was a member of the Executive Committee of the ANC.

Adv Mushwana was a Member of Parliament and has served on several parliamentary committees, including the Audit Commission and Judicial Service Commission. He was the Deputy Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces before he was appointed Public Protector in 2002.
